Why a local +1 242 phone number matters
Published 15 October 2026 · 2 min read
A +1 242 number is a Bahamian phone number, part of the same North American numbering plan as the US and Canada. It tells clients, banks and partners that your business has a real presence in The Bahamas, and with an answered line, every call is handled in your company's name even when you are elsewhere.
What a +1 242 number is
The 242 area code has covered The Bahamas since October 1996, when it replaced the shared Caribbean code 809. Because The Bahamas is part of the North American Numbering Plan, callers in the US and Canada dial 1-242 and the number, just like a long-distance call at home, with no international prefix.
Why companies use one
It matches your address. A company with a Nassau address and an overseas phone number looks like it isn’t really here. A local number completes the picture.
Local clients call local numbers. Customers and suppliers in The Bahamas are far more likely to call, and to trust, a 242 number than a foreign one.
Forms and banks ask for it. Applications, registrations and bank forms often ask for a local contact number. Having one ready avoids awkward gaps.
It keeps your personal number private. A business line separates company calls from your own phone.
What an answered line adds
A number on its own still needs someone to pick it up. With an answered business line:
- Calls are answered in your company’s name during business hours.
- Messages are relayed to you the way you prefer: email, text or a quick call.
- Voicemails out of hours arrive in your inbox.
- Callers reach a person, not an unanswered phone, while you are travelling, in meetings or in another time zone.
